Saying goodbye is hard. Saying goodbye to a fabric store that has filled your fabric stash with many treasures over the years is bittersweet. Vogue Fabrics is closing their Main Street store in Evanston as of October 12, 2021.
My first visit to a Vogue Fabrics was actually their location in Water Tower Place in Chicago. That was back in the late 1980’s. Eventually, that location closed. Because I lived in Chicago at that time, I shopped frequently at the location on Roosevelt Road in Chicago. That was a nice location with several other fabric stores in close proximity.
I think my first experience with the Evanston store was in the 1990’s when I took a flat pattern design class at the store. It was a wonderful way for me to start learning how to design simple garments.
Since I moved away from downtown Chicago, Vogue on Main Street in Evanston has been my go to store for decades. I have found many treasured pieces of material at the store. I have enjoyed interacting with the staff who are creative and friendly.
My last shopping trip to Vogue on Main Street was like any other. The tables were still filled rolls of fabric. There was some activity in the notions department and remnant department, and I could tell things were being cleared out.
Some of the fabrics were on sale, so I tried to make the trip count. I found a black poplin with a white stripe for a vest and some other fabrics for upcoming projects.
The images show how I will remember the store with all of its rolls of fabric organized by type of fabric. The silk room with its wall of silk fabric and all of the dream garments that I have yet to make.
Vogue Fabrics will reopen in its warehouse at 618 Hartrey Ave. in Evanston on October 15th. The warehouse is west and south of the former Main Street store. I have been to the warehouse store for one of their warehouse sales. It is a massive space. I am interested to see how they will integrate retail with wholesale.
